You have what you have. Too much of it. Not enough. “Who” matters. Not “it.”
Last year at Pond Hockey it was too cold to skate so we found ourselves jumping on the social media bandwagon and throwing boiling water off the deck and watching it freeze mid-air. This year found us doing the reverse…filling pots with frozen water (aka snow and icicles) and putting them on the stove to melt down for toilet water on account of the broken well and all.
What a difference a year makes.
Despite the sub-optimal conditions to start the weekend—and it really did mess with our collective juju—we all rallied hard and managed to have yet another “best weekend of the year.”
And there’s a big lesson in that.
Actually, there are several. Things like:
Attitude is everything.
Teamwork does make the dream work. (As long as you have the right teammates.)
A good belly laugh can fix anything.
So can a good playlist.
And a bottomless mimosa provides a solid assist (hold the orange juice).
You can’t over appreciate the thoughtfulness and generosity of others. Case in point:
If you have insomnia, it’s way more gratifying to count blessings than sheep.
Anyhow, we had a blast. (I also had my first iced dirty chai nonfat latte, which I had no idea existed so I had no idea what I’d been missing. It was so good. IYKYK. If you don’t, Google it.)
We got home yesterday, underslept and overtired, but got organized, showered up, and headed out for a visit and a quick fix of pizza at Denly’s with my sis and bro-in law (just back from vaca), my other sis (in town from MI for work), all three nieces, and my nephew’s gf. It was perfection*.
*my nephews and mom weren’t there
Allow me to repeat today’s Maiku (Myku?):
You have what you have. Too much of it. Not enough. “Who” matters. Not “it.”
It really is about who you have in your life, not what you have. This weekend was one giant reminder of that.
Good friends >>> running water
(It also reminded me that if you’re going away for the weekend you’re wise to change the bedsheets before you go away—there’s nothing better than coming home and climbing into your own bed with crisp, clean, fresh-smelling, tightly tucked sheets. Seriously. Pro tip.)
And even though I was exhausted, before I climbed under those sheets, I watched the Grammys from start to finish. My top 3 moments:
3. Billy (how cute was the story about the song’s co-writer Freddy Wexler, and how cute was he?),
2. Joni (but what was up with Brandi Carlisle dressing like Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter?), and
Drum roll, please…
1. Tracy (Tracy!) (TRACY!) (how respectful, deferential, and reverential was Luke?).
(In 4th place was Annie covering Sinéad.) (And how about TSwizzle setting a record as the first artist ever to win Album of the Year four times AND announcing that her new album is dropping April 19, a date I immediately put on my calendar?)
Great show. Lots of girl power.
In the end, Babs Streisand is on the right track: People who need people are the luckiest people in the world.
I happen to think that people who have people are the luckiest people in the Universe. And I consider myself to be one such lucky person. I have some mind-blowingly amazing people in my life. People who are compassionate. Passionate. Funny. Loving. Smart. Loyal. Supportive. Encouraging. Generous. Empathetic. Thoughtful. Reliable. Bad-ass. And so on..
I am so grateful to have you in my life, appreciate you being here with me, so much, and hope you have a great week.
Love you too.
