Waterlogged weekend.
Climate change is real. Be warned.
It’s so f-cking hot.
Yesterday was the 6th day of the heat wave here and today is expected to be the 7th. I know. It’s summer. What else should I expect? I have no problem with it—I’m just saying…it’s really hot. I’m very glad we decided to put those two mini-splits in when we renovated. The compressor is working like a dog and can’t quite keep up with the heat, but they’re a godsend…and I’m so glad I don’t have to go into the office to keep cool. (And to those of you feeling like you’re on the fringes of hell, well, I can’t recommend this USB desk fan highly enough. It moves the air around just enough to keep things tolerable because the a/c doesn’t really reach my home “office.”) Additionally, the pool is awesome (duh), as it gives as an option to be outside—though the only place we can go outside is in the pool itself. The deck is too hot to walk or sit on. The patio is covered, thus shaded, but even with the ceiling fan on the air is so thick you choke on it. And the pool is a great relief, but the water is up to 90°—it’s still refreshing, but still…it’s approximating a 35K gallon hot tub at this point.
Anyhow, the weekend was fantastic and almost all the fun revolved around the pool. And it probably comes as no surprise that the fun revolved around two of my fave topics—friends and family. It started on Friday when the son of a friend came over with a friend for lunch and a swim. He was in Boston for the weekend, and I love that he wanted to come see us when he was here. I’ve talked about this before and I am happy to talk about it again—I also love that I’ve built friendships with my friend’s kids. They have such great energy, are so fun to be around, and keep me feeling young (and maybe feeling a tiny bit hip, a touch relevant). So having two young people take the train to the suburbs for a few hours was a real treat to kick off the weekend. It definitely reinforced how important it is to have friends across generations—it’s more than the energy and the fun, it’s also their unique perspective. They look at life from a decidedly different angle than I, so it’s fun to crane my neck and get a glimpse of the life they see. It also is fun for me—having once been there—to think back to those days and to re-visit those moments with today’s knowledge, the realization that they were all stepping stones to right now. And come on, yeah it’s hot as balls, but there is no place I’d rather be, no life I’d rather be living than my right now. There’s so much to be said for that yet words hardly cover it.
Unlike the visitors to the house, we did not go to the Red Sox Friday night so we did not spend one red cent watching a 28-5 embarrassment of a loss that included giving up an—sit down for this—inside-the-park grand slam. Oh. Em. Gee. While the Sox were getting destroyed we were enjoying a really fun night out with my sis and bro-in-law. We got an 8:45 rez at a place in the Seaport so we all were able to put the hot work week in the rearview before we headed in—it was a perfect night. (Well, almost perfect—none of us won MegaMillions. 😔)
Saturday was another full day by the pool. Friends from the gym and their two young kids (9 and 5) came. They generously handled the food and cooking which was especially appreciated on such a scorcher of a day. Little kids provide a whole other lesson in perspective and these two kids are like little adults (in the best possible way). We had such a great time and we ended up bobbing in the pool for quite a while after they left, well after dark. Reminder here is about staying open to new friendships—new people keep things interesting, new friendships inject my (sometimes stale) routines with new energy.
Sunday morning we went out for a great brunch with Kerri’s family for a belated bday celebration for her (delayed by COVID…not us). It was a nice time and delicious meal, then we all headed back here for a swim. A number of Kerri’s cousins and their families joined the fun, so we had a pool full of people all day long. It was great to see them—they’re awesome and it had been way too long. Tunes cranking, shrieks of laughter, splash after splash…all good things. We ended up running to Next Page for a dozen bar pizzas, which was the perfect dinner on such a hot day. Place cleared out around 8:30PM, giving us time for another evening bob and a beer before wrapping it up and getting ourselves and the house ready for the work week. No Sunday Scaries for us! So grateful for familyfriends—they are a total win-win.

But it’s never too hot for fun, and we had plenty of it this weekend. I hope you did too. Have a great week. Thanks for being here—love you too.
Big fan of this new RHCP tune, so I’ll kick the week off with it:
